UPDATED MAR 2020. The Dolomites keep proving to me that no matter how many times you visit, there’s always a new place to explore. A couple of weeks ago I packed lunch and visited the Tramonti di Sopra nature pool and it made for an awesome day trip. It’s a little off the beaten path so it was a quiet, peaceful spot and the water was just gorgeous. In today’s post, I’m sharing a guide on how to get there with all the tips you need to plan a fun day out.
Tramonti Di Sopra Nature Pool – The Off The Beaten Path Swimming Oasis

The basics
Location:
Drive: 2 hours from Vicenza (2.5 hours if you avoid toll roads)
Cost: No fee for swimming or parking. Approximately 22 Euro in tolls from Vicenza
Parking: Side of the road
Skill: Easy

Driving tips
Some of the roads to get to the Tramonti di Sopra nature pool are quite narrow, in classic Italian style. If you have a big truck or car, it might be worth carpooling with someone else with a smaller car.
If you will be visiting and renting a car, it’s a good idea to rent a smaller one. This will make it a bit easier to get around in the narrow streets and smaller parking spaces.
If you will be driving from somewhere other than the Vicenza area, you can use this site to get an estimate of what the tolls will cost. I use this all the time when I plan road trips and it’s quite accurate.

Tips on how to get to the Tramonti di Sopra nature pool
Use the coordinates and follow the direction until you get to this fork in the road. When you see that, take the road which descends down on the right.
As you follow that you will see a small area off to the side of the road where you can park your car. You’ll probably see a couple of other cars there too.
After you park your car, you will be able to see the waterfall and nature pool from the road. This will give you your bearings on where to head to. There is room for swimming and sunbaking above the waterfall or below, so you can either take the path further down that leads to the area above the waterfall or the closer trail which takes you down to the area below.
Just keep an eye out for little trails on the side of the road – they aren’t signed or marked but you will be able to see the trail others have left.

What to expect
This little nature pool is like a sparkling oasis in the mountains.
You can swim in the water, but be prepared for it to be cold! It’s very refreshing on a hot summer day.
If you like a little adventure there is a jump spot from the waterfall into the nature pool. Though I’d recommend checking the depth first because this would be different at different times of the year.
You can also follow the water up or downstream to explore the area and other nature pool spots.
Otherwise, you can laze on the rocks in the sun, take a dip, and enjoy the gorgeous mountains.

Other locations for wild swimming in north Italy
Emerald Pools (Pozze Smeraldine)
The Emerald Pools are only about 25 minutes away and you can use Emerald Pools in Google Maps to get there. It’s another great area to go swimming in nature pools.
There is free parking at the main area which is a good spot for families. You can also follow the water further up to find private spots and there was also jump spot off the bridge further up the road too.
The cool, clear water is great for a refreshing swim and there are lots of quiet spots for it to not feel crowded.
If you have snacks or drinks you can keep them chilled in the water.
Cascate di Crosis
This is more of a local spot for families to splash around in the water and enjoy the sunshine.
The waterfall comes from a dam above and they release water from there now and then which makes the falls gush. If you hear the alarm (you can’t miss it), this means the water is about to be released so just make sure to move away from the bottom of the falls.
To get there just put ‘Cascate di Crosis’ into Google Maps and look out for the sign to the waterfall. It’s about 1 hour away from the Tramonti di Sopra nature pool.
Torrente Canali
Torrente Canali is a gorgeous swimming spot about 2.5 hours from the Tramonti di Sopra nature pool.
One area has a beautiful blue nature pool to swim in. I’ll warn you, the water is that cold, mountain water temperature but the color of the water and epic backdrop of the mountains is worth it.
There is also a lot of hiking in the area as well and camping nearby.

Contra Pria
There’s more clear mountain water for you to swim in at Contra Pria which is about 3 hours away from the Tramonti di Sopra nature pool. The color is a beautiful emerald and equally mesmerizing as Torrente Canali.
The water splits through rocks for a long stretch so you can find a spot, laze on a rock, and take some dips in the cool water.
Contra Pria has a jump spot from a bridge if you are really adventurous. I’ve also seen people kayaking and snorkeling there.

Where to stay near Tramonti di Sopra
Agriturismo Borgo Titol would be a great option for somewhere to stay in Tramonti di Sopra.
Another good idea would be to base yourself out of Cortina d’Ampezzo because there is a lot of good hikes and activities in that area and it’s so beautiful.
Then you could drive the 2.5 hours to the nature pool one day and combine it with the Emerald Pools for a day trip idea.
